What is the principle of carburizing

Carburizing, like other chemical heat treatments, also includes 3 basic processes.

①Decomposition: The decomposition of carburizing medium produces activated carbon atoms.

②Adsorption: After being absorbed by the surface of steel parts, activated carbon atoms dissolve into the surface austenite, increasing the carbon content in the austenite.

③Diffusion: The increase in surface carbon content will cause a concentration difference with the core carbon content, and the surface carbon will diffuse into the interior. The diffusion rate of carbon in steel mainly depends on the temperature, and at the same time is related to the difference in the internal and external concentrations of the infiltrated elements in the workpiece and the content of alloy elements in the steel.
